In digital photography, high quality and portability are most of the time at odds with each other, with higher quality output requiring larger equipment or numerous attachments. Sony is attempting to bridge that gap with its new RX10 digital camera that offers DSLR-style photography without needing to bring half a dozen interchangeable lenses along for the ride.
The RX10 boasts of an Exmor R CMOS sensor with an effective resolution of 20.2 megapixels as well as the new BIONZ X processor that offers three times more processing speed, allowing for the shooting of full HD videos. The Direct Drive SSM gives the RX10 fast and responsive autofocus, while Lock-on AF can accurately track moving objects.

The real star of the show, however, is the fixed Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-200mm zoom lens that can practically replace your entire interchangeable lens set. It features a variable zoom range, from wide-angle to telephoto, and can focus even at a short distance of 3cm for a beautiful close-up. The lens also has a bright F2.8 maximum aperture across all zoom ranges, delivering the necessary brightness even in low light scenes without having to boost the ISO settings.
All of these features do not come a the price of portability, as the RX10 remains in a small and compact magnesium alloy body that is not only durable, but also dust and moisture resistant. And what modern digital camera today would be without NFC and WiFi for connectivity with Sony Xperia or other Android devices, not just for fast and easy data transfer but also for additional features, such as remote control via a smartphone. Sony is also announcing a range of accessories for the camera, including a jacket case, a stereo microphone, and flash. The Sony Cyber-shot RX10 is available now for pre-order on Sony UK’s online store but the rest of Europe will have to wait until the middle of November.
