Taiwanese motherboard maker, Gigabyte, is certainly pushing the envelop in the Ultrabook space with its latest entry, the U2142. Like many of the upcoming Windows 8 devices such as the Dell XPS 12 and Sony Vaio Duo 11, the new Gigabyte machine comes with a touchscreen display, Ultrabook-class specifications and can be used as a laptop or tablet.
But while most convertible laptops feature SSD for storage, the U2142 takes the unconventional approach by offering both SSD and hard drive. Yes, it will accommodate a 256GB SSD and a 1TB hard drive, giving it a total of more than 1.2TB of storage space which is the most we've seen in a machine of this class.
According to Gigabyte's Senior Specialist in the Channel Marketing Section, Hanif Wang, the U2142 is targeted at road warriors who will need lots of storage and connectivity options while on the go.
We've had a chance to play with a sample unit of the U2142 when we visited the Gigabyte headquarters in Taipei. Obviously, it is not as thin as full-fledged Ultrabooks or as lightweight as dedicated tablets. Nonetheless, it is still quite amazing how Gigabyte managed to pack a dual storage system into a slim convertible laptop.

The U2142 convertible Ultrabook is expected to be available soon after Microsoft's Windows 8 launch on Oct 26. It is estimated to retail around US $ 999 and will be available in selected markets.
Together with the U2142, Gigabyte also announced a new Windows 8 tablet, the S1082, which sports a massive 500GB HDD (or 256GB SSD).
