Sony showcases prototype 20.5-inch oled-monitor with 2560 x 2048 pixels

During a meeting of the North American Radiological Society in Chicago, Sony has shown its latest developments in the field of oled panels. The manufacturer displayed a 20.5-inch monitor, specially designed for medical purposes. It's not unlikely that the underlying technology will find its way to the consumer market though.

The work-in-progress monitor hasn't yet been named, but Sony did reveal some of the key specifications. The panel has a 20.5-inch diagonal and a 5:4 aspect ratio. Thanks to the oled-technology, the 2560 x 2048 pixels are each lit individually. The result is a claimed brightness of no less than 500 cd / m², true blacks and outstanding viewing angles and contrast.

As mentioned, this specific monitor is intended for the medical sector, for instance to visualize surgical procedures. The high image resolution, brightness and viewing angles could offer a sizable advantage. The panel has been developed by Sony's Medical Systems Division. No word has been spoken on any contribution of oled-partner Panasonic.
