Oppo R809T officially announced in China, fails to become the thinnest smartphone in the world

The Oppo R809T was rumored a couple of weeks ago (which incidentally is also both the first and the last time we’ve heard about it until today), and it seemed so nice… That rumor spoke about record-breaking slimness being achieved by the Chinese company that once had a device with the “world’s thinnest smartphone title”. 6.13 mm it was going to be.

Today though, the Oppo R809T got official, and it turns out that number was right – save for one digit. See, the R809T isn’t 6.13 mm thin, it’s actually 6.93 mm. See how much of a difference one digit makes? So the Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra can still claim the title of world’s thinnest smartphone that isn’t yet available anywhere, thanks to its 6.45 mm frame. It’s a good day therefore for TCL, the company behind the Alcatel name in mobile, but not so much for those of you who were expecting another record-breaker from Oppo after the Finder.

The R809T was announced by the company on Sina Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter. The handset sports a 4.7-inch 720p touchscreen, an 8 MP rear camera, a 2 MP front camera with 88-degree wide-angle lens, a quad-core 1.2 GHz processor (we’re guessing it’s the MediaTek MT6589 chipset at work here), 1 GB of RAM, and it runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. That’s a bit surprising since so far the Samsung Galaxy S4 is the only non-Nexus device to launch running that particular version of Android. Then again, we don’t yet have an official release date for the R809T. Oh, and the rather forgettable name wasn’t replaced with something more memorable unfortunately. The one and only rumor about this phone claimed it would be out on April 26. That’s tomorrow. Let’s wait and see if this pans out.
