Sony Outs the Sporty Xperia ZR for Underwater Fun

Thinking of a new smartphone before you head out for your ritualistic annual beach holiday? Consider the new Xperia ZR from Sony. It may not be as big as the company's flagship Xperia Z (which forgives a beer spill or two), but is water-resistant, enough to let you film under water. Sony goes as far as calling the Xperia ZR the pinnacle of its mobile engineering prowess.

The phone is IP55 and IP58-compliant, letting you immerse the device 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes, which should be enough to freeze your seaside fun or pool-party, with its 13-megapixel Exmor RS-powered camera, backed by Cyber-shot HDR post-processing, scene-recognition, and active digital noise reduction. The camera is capable of 1080p video recording.

Featuring a similar black-monolith design as its older siblings, the Xperia ZR features a 4.6-inch display with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution, and Mobile Bravia Engine 2. Its innards are similar to the Xperia Z flagship, with Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro clocked at 1.50 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, and a customized Android 4.1 with Sony apps (Walkman, PlayStation Mobile, etc.). The Stamina mode powers down unnecessary components, and extends battery life.

The Xperia ZR will be available within this quarter, just in time for your trip.
