Toshiba Outs New 20-Megapixel BSI CMOS Image Sensor

Toshiba launched its next-generation 20-megapixel CMOS still camera sensor, the TCM5115CL. Designed for mainstream point-and-shoots and entry-level DSLRs, the sensor features back-side illumination (BSI), a 1/2.3-inch optical format, and a pixel size of just 1.2 micrometers, which is smaller than the 1.34-micrometer pixel size of the company's previous generation 16 megapixel sensor.

The TCM5115CL supports continuous shooting at its maximum resolution, at a staggering 30 frames per second, it can capture 1080p video at 60 frames per second, and 720p video at 100 frames per second.

Toshiba will begin sampling of the new sensor in January 2013, mass-production will follow in August, and products based on it could begin to roll out in the second half of next year.
