Apple iOS 6.1 – Official Release

Apple this morning rolled out iOS 6.1, the latest update to its popular mobile operating system powering iPhones and iPads. Notably, the update adds LTE (4G networking) capabilities to 36 additional iPhone carriers and 23 additional iPad carriers worldwide.

According to the release notes accompanying iOS 6.1, Apple has just included LTE support for more carriers. The complete list of supported carriers is available at here.

As revealed by developers during the beta period, iOS 6.1 further includes new options to purchase movie tickets through Fandango with Siri (USA only), and a new button to reset the Advertising Identifier in the Settings module.

For iTunes Match subscribers, iOS 6.1 offers the ability to download individual songs from iCloud.

For developers, there’s a new Search API in Map Kit embedded in the software which enables third-party application makers to provide map-based addresses and points of interest directly within their software.

“Whether it’s finding the nearest coffee shop or looking up sites for an upcoming trip, users can find helpful business details such as phone numbers or URLs,” Apple says.

The Cupertino giant directs application sellers to the Map Kit Framework Reference in order to learn more about the new Search API.

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said, “iOS 6 is the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, and with nearly 300 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices on iOS 6 in just five months, it may be the most popular new version of an OS in history.”

“iOS 6.1 brings LTE support to more markets around the world, so even more users can enjoy ultrafast Safari browsing, FaceTime video calls, iCloud services, and iTunes and App Store downloads,” Schiller adds. The software update is available for all iPhone, iPod touch and iPad models that support iOS 6.
