6 inch, 1080p Nokia Windows Phone 8 phablet (codenamed Bandit) in testing at AT&T

Nokia is seemingly getting ready to announce its very first phablet – a Windows Phone 8 device with a 6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels display.

According to The Verge, the upcoming device is codenamed Bandit. In addition to being the world’s first 1080p Windows Phone 8 handset, this should also be the first WP device to have a quad-core processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon – probably the 800 model, although the 600 and 400 versions also have quad-core architectures).

Reportedly, the 6 inch Nokia phablet has a polycarbonate body, is thin and lightweight, and comes with a rear camera of at least 20MP. AT&T is currently testing the device, and its launch is scheduled for this year (at least in the US).

Since Windows Phone 8 does not support 1080p displays at the moment, Nokia has to wait for Microsoft to launch its GDR3 update before introducing the Bandit.

Meanwhile, Nokia will host a mysterious press event on August 28 in Russia. But this probably has nothing to do with the 6 inch phablet. The invitation to the event mentions something about a “world premiere”. Piano keys are visible in the background, but there is no way of telling if that’s a hint or not. Perhaps we’ll see the rumored 5.2 inch Nokia Lumia 825 at the August event. We’ll let you know.

In related news, The Verge has it that the Nokia Lumia 925 (currently available only at T-Mobile in the US) will be released via more American carriers “soon.”
