Roku 3 Launched, New Interface and Private Listening

Roku launched the third generation of its popular streaming media player, the Roku 3. A new curvy piano-black body aside, it features faster hardware, which drives an improved on-screen user interface, and a redesigned remote that features a 3.5 mm headphones jack that allows you to use your favorite pair of IEMs at the comfort of your couch.

Like its predecessor, the Roku 3 comes fully loaded with over 750 channels of entertainment, which are beamed to your TV at 1080p resolution, and connects to your home Internet connection over dual-band 802.11 b/g/n (up to 450 Mbps), or gigabit Ethernet. You can add local storage using common USB mass-storage devices, or micro-SDHC.

The Roku Entertainment Platform supports most common web-enabled content providers, including Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu Plus, Vudu Movies, HBO GO, Disney, and Pandora Radio. Rovio's Angry Birds ports work just fine, if you can get a hang of its remote.

"As Roku continues to build the largest selection of streaming entertainment, we are always exploring ways to improve the TV experience for our customers," said Anthony Wood, founder and CEO, Roku. "Roku 3 introduces thoughtful new features that customers will love. The intuitive new interface makes it easy to find movies and shows quickly while the private listening mode is perfect for late-night streamers who don't want to wake up the family."

Priced at US $99.99, Roku 3 is now available in the US, through Roku's own store and Amazon. It will reach select international markets in April.
